Frequently Asked Questions at Social Sparks RI
  • At Social Sparks, we strive to create a positive and successful group therapy experience for all participants. The environment for effective group therapy is crucial, especially since many clients may initially feel reluctant to participate and get comfortable. We invest significant time and consideration into group placements to ensure the participants and content are well-suited to each client's needs.

Following the intake assessment, a clinician may recommend some individual therapy to better prepare a client for group therapy. A transition plan from individual to group therapy will be developed to ensure a more successful group experience. Additionally, if a client exhibits aggressive or unsafe behaviors, individual therapy sessions will be recommended before starting group therapy. In some cases, clients may need to take a break from the group to focus on individual work if they struggle to engage in the group setting. Referrals for home-based, intensive outpatient, or other higher levels of care may be recommended to address immediate needs and better prepare clients for group therapy.

If a client is currently participating in a higher level of care, we recommend completing these programs before pursuing outpatient group therapy. Insurance may not cover both simultaneously. We may also recommend at least one individual session after completing other services or programs before starting group therapy. It is helpful if we can connect with the former service provider to discuss treatment goals and progress.

To fully engage and benefit from group therapy, clients need foundational skills such as following basic directions, maintaining personal and others' safety, and staying in the designated space without risk of flight or elopement. Social Sparks staff work hard to support all group therapy members, but most groups operate with 1-2 adults in the room. Any recommendations made to better prepare the client for group therapy are intended to ensure a positive experience.

  • Due to confidentiality and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations, parents are not permitted to stay in group therapy sessions with their child unless it is a parent-child-focused group. However, the last 5-10 minutes of each session are designated for parents to join and review the activities and skills covered. If a more private conversation is needed, a family session can be scheduled with the group clinician.

  • We ask all clients to notify us of absences by calling the cancellation line at 401-475-0653 ext. 2. There is a $30 fee for no-call/no-show absences. Consistent weekly attendance is essential for the success of group therapy. It provides stability for both the client and other group members and helps build stronger, more trusting relationships. Missing sessions can make it challenging to fully engage, as group concepts often build from one week to the next. Please communicate your availability during intake so we can determine the most appropriate group placement for you.

  • Therapy is a highly individualized and evolving process that varies for each person, making it impossible to set a definitive timeline. The first 3-4 sessions serve as an assessment period to develop personalized goals and identify each client's strengths and areas of need. For parents and caregivers, family sessions can be scheduled at any time to discuss a child's progress in the group.

  • All group placements are determined after a thorough review of each client's intake assessment by the clinical team. We consider client needs, developmental level, strengths, and interests to ensure an appropriate and successful group placement. Sometimes, group placements may change after an initial assessment of the client's functioning within the group setting, based on the client's best interests and therapeutic goals.

  • Some insurance plans only allow for two outpatient sessions a week, however, if a client would like to attend more therapeutic groups, there is a self-pay option for groups not covered by insurance. Check with your insurance provider or at the front desk for more information about your specific eligibility and benefits.

  • We encourage open communication between clients, families, and group clinicians. Parents or guardians of children in group therapy can briefly speak with clinicians at the end of each session. If more time is needed, we recommend scheduling a family session with the group clinician. For clients 18 or older, a signed release is required for the clinician to communicate with a parent or any other person. Adults may request a check-in with their group clinician at any time.

  • All insurance plans require co-payments to be collected at the time of service. Negotiating or altering the copay amount is a violation of the insurance agreement.

  • We encourage clients and parents to work with the clinician to discuss progress and concerns. Each case is assessed individually, and if there is evidence of a therapeutic need to change a group or clinician, a transition plan will be developed. It is crucial that the client feels the group or clinician is the right fit, and we welcome and encourage feedback. Please understand that many factors influence availability of an alternative group or clinician and we will do our best to make the transition as quickly as possible.

  • The therapeutic process at Social Sparks is tailored to each client's individual needs. Progress in a group setting may differ from progress in individual sessions. Our clinicians develop personalized treatment plans for all clients and closely monitor their progress towards goals and objectives on a weekly basis. Progress can manifest in various ways, such as adapting to group dynamics, increasing participation, and demonstrating an understanding of skills.

Therapeutically, progress is evaluated by the client's ability to apply learned skills within the group, navigate different conflicts and challenges, and demonstrate comprehension of therapeutic concepts. The generalization of skills outside the group setting depends on the client's progress within the group and the support available in other environments.

For children, family engagement plays a crucial role in each client's progress at Social Sparks and is strongly encouraged to support therapeutic growth.

  • For both group and individual therapy services, clients/families are encouraged to bring their initial concerns or questions directly to the provider or clinician. This approach aligns with best practices in working towards the client's treatment goals. If concerns persist even after initial discussions, please don't hesitate to contact Kristen Spencer at 401-475-0653 or via email at info@socialsparksri.com.

  • We understand that emergencies can happen, leading to necessary appointment cancellations beyond the client's control. In such cases, we strive to accommodate clients to the best of our ability. However, when appointments are missed without prior cancellation or if a pattern of repetitive cancellations emerges, a $30 fee will be charged per missed session. Unless arrangements have been made with the front office, this balance must be settled before resuming therapy.

For individual therapy services, the provider or clinician reserves the right to terminate services after three consecutive no-shows or cancellations. A $75 fee applies for each missed individual therapy appointment.
